AI Insights overview
The Insights page is a chat with an AI assistant that has read access to a summary of your financial data. Ask questions in plain English and get answers grounded in your accounts, transactions, and budgets.
What the AI can do
- Answer questions about your spending — by category, merchant, date range.
- Compare months, surface trends, and highlight unusual charges.
- Walk through what your subscriptions cost annually.
- Summarize your top merchants or top categories for the current month.
What the AI can't do
- Move money or change anything. It's read-only.
- Edit transactions, categories, rules, or budgets. It can describe them, not change them.
- See holdings inside investment accounts. Only balances are tracked.
- Predict the future or give legal/tax advice. It's an assistant, not a financial planner.
- Remember conversations across sessions. Each chat starts fresh.
Bring your own key
Insights uses an AI provider you choose, with an API key you supply. MoneyVue does not include a built-in AI quota. See Configuring your AI provider for setup.
Until a provider is configured, the chat input is disabled and shows "Not configured."
What gets sent to the provider
Every question sends a summarized snapshot of your data — account balances, recent spending by category, top merchants, recent transactions. See AI privacy for the exact contents and how to limit them.
Suggested questions
The Insights page shows a row of suggested prompts to get you started:
- "How much did I spend on food this month?"
- "What are my top 5 expenses?"
- "Show me my spending trends."
- "Do I have any unusual charges?"
- "How much am I spending on subscriptions?"

FAQ
Is my data being used to train AI models? That depends on your provider's terms. MoneyVue passes the data once per chat — what the provider does with it is governed by their policies. See AI privacy.
Can I run a local model instead? Yes, if it speaks the OpenAI-compatible API. Pick the Custom provider and set the base URL. Custom providers are gated by an admin allowlist; see Configuring your AI provider.
Why is my answer wrong? The AI works from a summary, not your full transaction history. It can miss details and is occasionally confidently wrong. Treat answers as a starting point, then verify on the Transactions or Reports page.
