Managing categories

Categories are how spending is bucketed for budgets, reports, and Insights. Settings → Categories is where you create, rename, regroup, or delete them.

Two-pane layout

  • Left pane — category groups (Food, Transportation, etc.) plus an "All categories" view and an "Ungrouped" bucket.
  • Right pane — categories within the selected group.

Creating a group

  1. Click New Group in the left pane.
  2. Type a name (e.g., "Household").
  3. Press Enter or click Create.

Creating a category

  1. Pick a group on the left, or pick "All categories" to create one ungrouped.
  2. Click the new-category button on the right pane.
  3. Enter a name and an optional icon.
  4. Save.

Renaming and regrouping

  • Rename a group — open the group's menu (three-dot icon) and click Rename.
  • Rename a category — click the category to open its editor.
  • Move a category to a different group — drag-and-drop or use the category editor's group dropdown.

Deleting a category

Open the category's menu and click Delete. If the category has transactions, MoneyVue prompts you to reassign them to another category first — you can't leave them stranded.

Group-level budget mode

A group can be set to budget by Group or by Category:

  • By category — each child category has its own budget target. Spending in one doesn't help another.
  • By group — one shared budget covers the whole group. All child categories pool their spending against it.

Switch via the group's menu. See How budgets work.

Group-level rollover

Groups in Budget by group mode can also have Monthly rollover turned on at the group level. See How rollover works for the math.

Default groups

New accounts come with a starter set of groups (Food, Transportation, Housing, etc.) and common categories. You can rename, delete, or add to them — nothing is locked.

FAQ

Can two categories have the same name? Not within the same group. Across groups, yes — Other under Food and Other under Transportation are distinct.

Will deleting a group delete its categories? No. Categories move to Ungrouped when the group is deleted.

Can I share categories between users? No. Categories are per-user.
